1. France bans supermarkets from throwing away excess food.

France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them instead to donate it to charities and food banks.


2. Nepal Set to Become First Country to Double Wild Tiger Population

On the occasion of National Conservation Day, Nepal announced that there are now an estimated 235 wild tigers in the country, nearly doubling the baseline of around 121 tigers in 2009. If these trends continue, Nepal could become the first country to double its national tiger population since the ambitious TX2 goal – to double the world’s wild tiger population by 2022 – was set at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010.



3. India plants 66 million trees in 12 hours


Volunteers in India planted more than 66 million trees in just 12 hours in a record-breaking environmental drive.

About 1.5 million people were involved in the huge plantation campaign, in which saplings were placed along the Narmada river in the state of Madhya Pradesh






4. Giant panda no longer Endangered


In a welcome piece of good news for the world’s threatened wildlife, the giant panda has just been downgraded from ‘Endangered’ to ‘Vulnerable’ on the global list of species at risk of extinction, demonstrating how an integrated approach can help save our planet’s vanishing biodiversity.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced the positive change to the giant panda’s official status in the Red List of Threatened Species, pointing to the 17% rise in the population in the decade up to 2014, when a nationwide census found 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China.






5. Saudi Arabia Lifts Ban On Female Drivers

Saudi Arabia lifted its widely criticized ban on female drivers, sparking jubilation among many women in the country who went out on the roads shortly after the ban was lifted.



6. The World's first Ocean Cleanup system launched from San Francisco

The Ocean Cleanup develops advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic.

Instead of going after plastic debris with vessels and nets – which would take many thousands of years and billions of dollars to complete – The Ocean Cleanup plans to deploy a fleet of extremely long floating barriers that act like an artificial coastline, enabling the winds and waves to passively catch and concentrate the plastic. Once fully operational, the full fleet of passive collection systems is expected to remove 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years’ time.



7. Norway set to become first Nordic country to ban fur farming

Norway is set to become the first Nordic country to ban fur industries, as it plans to close all fox and mink farms by 2025.

The pledge was made by Norway's Conservative Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, after partners in the country's new three-part coalition government discussed the terms of their collaboration.
